Got a custom order for a vintage style hand painted wooden oar. With no used paddles to be found, a brand new 52" one was purchased, unfinished.
I painted a dark brown faux finish to make the oar look old. At the customer's request, the words "Captain's Quarters" were hand lettered, accompanied by the embellishment of an anchor. The client's name was painted on the handle (not pictured here).
He's a retired physician turned musician and plays stand up bass for WildRoot String Band. He also plays fiddle and banjo.

He asked me to draw the words "This Machine Surrounds Hate and Forces It to Surrender" on his banjo in tribute to musician/activist Pete Seeger who passed away this year. My previous artistic contribution to my Dad's banjo was to paint a crescent moon and stars on his case a number of years back.

Being an artist for hire, and an admirer of Pete Seeger, I readily agreed! In preparation for my task, I searched for images of Pete's banjo.
I selected the Seeger banjo image I liked best and proceeded to write Pete's peaceful proclamation in similar fashion on my Dad's banjo.
While working on it, I noticed that Seeger's banjo has a misspelling. SURRENDER is spelled SURRRENDER with an extra R. I wondered if this was intentional, but upon scrutinizing the other banjo photos I could see that they were spelled correctly. Pete must have just goofed this one when he wrote it. It was exciting to discover this oddity so I didn't fix it.

Bruce Diamond and I met playing around town together in various bands. Bruce is not only a versatile musician, but he also makes a living as an instrument dealer for his business Diamond Strings.

He discovered I was an artist. I mentioned to him that I could paint artwork on guitars. He said he had the perfect project for me and asked if I would be interested in painting a replica of Eric Clapton's famous Cream Fool SG, circa 1967.
How could I refuse such an interesting and challenging commission? It was right up my alley artistically and musically. So that's how it all started, folks!
Now that the painted psychedelic artwork on the guitar is finished, I'll feel better if I put a clearcoat on it before it leaves my studio. Don't want any accidental scratches on all the hard work I've done!!! Bruce will apply more coats to further protect it when he gets the guitar home.
I'm using a product I'm familiar with, Zar fast-drying polyurethane Clear Antique Flat. I've used it before on many other painting projects. It has a slight yellow tint to it. This will help to make the guitar appear a bit yellow with age.
I've carefully taped blue painter's tape around the headstock and under the guitar body to prevent the polyurethane from dripping over the edges of the painted artwork. The tape can be peeled off after the poly dries for a nice clean edge.
I've procrastinated long enough! The intimidation of the pickguard got the best of me!
I finally mustered up the courage to finish the job. Onward, to completing a replica of Eric Clapton's Fool guitar!
I painted the pickguard in three sittings.
The wings have a strange tannish-gold color in the pictures I've seen of the guitar. I wondered if the wings were metallic gold since gold can be difficult to photograph and will often look a dull brown in a photo.
My good friend and ex-bandmate, Pat Thomas, is a writer, musician, and music historian. He happens to know Bobby Whitlock and said he would ask him for me about the color of the wings. Bobby Whitlock played the guitar many times back in the day when he collaborated with Eric Clapton on various musical projects, including Derek and the Dominos.
In any case, I don't know whether my painting will be truly historically accurate because at some point Todd Rundgren owned the guitar and had it refinished after it was left in sorry condition from many years of Clapton's vigorous use of it.
The couple became part of the fabric of the 1960s British music and fashion scene. After the artist group "The Fool" was formed, they painted a huge mural on the storefront of the Beatles' short-lived Apple Boutique in London. They designed the interior of the store with painted murals and were hired to set up shop producing their own unique style of artwork and psychedelic gypsy clothing to be sold there.

In my attempt to create a replica of this design that Koger and Posthuma painted on Eric Clapton's guitar when he was in the band Cream, I can't help but become increasingly absorbed in the fascinating cultural history of this era. Revisiting a youthful and radical psychedelic renaissance.

It is said that the artist's depiction of the angel's curly hair was based on Eric Clapton's perm at the time (1967).
It didn't occur to me while I was painting the angel, but afterward upon reviewing these photos I remembered a terrible tragedy in Clapton's life. The image of the angel takes on an entirely new meaning.....
Pictured is a little description of the 60s artist group "The Fool" found on page 49 of "Classic Guitars of the 60s" edited by Tony Bacon. Dutch artists Marijke Koger and Simon Posthuma were hired to paint an artistic Gibson SG for Eric Clapton when he was in the band Cream. He made good use of the guitar on Cream's first American tour in 1967 and in subsequent studio sessions.
The flames would be more fun if I could render them freestyle, but I'm trying to stay close to the original so it's a bit painstaking.

The locations of the holes for the volume and tone controls, and the locations of the
pickups seem to be a bit different on this guitar than the original. I
think I better ask Bruce for the hardware to trace it properly. I need
to know more precisely where the painting will be covered up.
My client, Bruce Diamond, supplied me with a great book for reference. Classic Guitars of the 60s edited by Tony Bacon has a picture of The Fool guitar on the front cover and a nice larger photo on the inside. Many other really unique guitars are in this book. Fun to read.
Bruce doesn't like how the psychedelic rainbow doesn't end at the point of the guitar so I'm extending it to the point. The rainbow on the original follows a weird, irregular pattern that kind of bugs me so I'm making the rainbow flow more symmetrically. Artistic license.
Join me as I embark upon my artistic journey to paint a copy of Eric Clapton's "The Fool" Gibson SG, made famous in 1967. My multi-talented musician friend Bruce Diamond of Diamond Strings has commissioned me to create a replica of this historic art guitar. Pictured below is the front and back of the original piece. I have been entrusted to paint a copy of the front only.
When Bruce approached me to do this project I was delighted to get a lesson in art history and music history as I was not aware of this guitar. This famous decorated instrument accompanied Eric Clapton and his band Cream on their first American tour. The two artists responsible for painting it soon after became part of a popular art group called "The Fool" (hence the naming of the guitar).

The Fool collective created an abundance of pop culture art during the 60's including clothing, posters, paintings, and murals. They worked for many British bands, among them The Beatles. <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Rochester artist Beth Brown is obsessed with stars. Not the celebrity variety of Hollywood fame,
but the kind that adorn the barns of Pennsylvania’s farm country. Hex signs to be exact. These colorful geometric designs enclosed
within a circle have been painted on barns in the rural counties of PA for nearly
200 years.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Brown’s fascination with this subject has resulted in her
series of painted studies for an exhibit called “Hex Signs & Barn Stars” now
featured at Starry Nites Café. Loosely
based on the traditional designs, she has created a variety of stars with
acrylic paints on mostly round shaped canvases and wood. 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 16 pointed stars are
depicted, many painted with a crackle finish to make them appear worn with time.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">German in origin, this type of traditional folk art was
sprung from fraktur drawings, stemming from the rich history of Pennsylvania
Dutch (Deutsch) culture. Hex signs were used by farmers to decorate
their barns and, some say, to ward off evil spirits or bring good luck or
fortune to the farm dwellers.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Brown’s recent fixation on the historical signs started
about six months ago. “I’ve been
carrying around a library book on Hex signs like it’s my bible,” she says. “As an artist, once I get motivated creatively
by a new art form, I try to absorb and learn the subject as much as I can,
visually and intellectually, until I get it out of my system and move on to a
new inspiration.” Regarding her attraction
to the subject, she explains, “I’m not really sure why I’m so drawn to
them. To me, the stars on the barns
express the historical and cultural heritage of the community and a sense of
pride in their livelihood. The signs act
as beacons speaking to passersby throughout the Pennsylvania countryside. But mostly they evoke a sense of mystery and
wonder that captures my attention.” When
asked about the association of magic in the signs, Brown says, “I find the
folklore relating to the stars fascinating, but I don’t pretend to be an expert
on the purposes of their symbolic meanings.
I’m mostly focused on their decorative aspects.”
